M4A and WAV: what changes
M4A usually holds AAC audio, Apple’s compressed format (iPhone, voice memos, GarageBand, iTunes): it sounds good at small sizes, but some programs and platforms do not accept it.
WAV is uncompressed audio (PCM): it stores every sample as is, so it is larger and it is the standard to record, mix and master.

Is a WAV made from an M4A good for mastering?
Yes, 24-bit WAV is the format mastering services ask for. Keep in mind the AAC inside the M4A was already lossy; for the best result use the original uncompressed export if you have it.
