Use the vocal setting first
MixingMusic has a female / male vocal option. Set it there; it is more reliable than writing it in the style. If you leave it empty, the model chooses.
Describe the character
Gender is only part of a voice. Add one or two descriptors to the style:
- Texture: breathy, raspy, smooth, clear, husky.
- Power: soft, intimate, powerful, belting.
- Style: crooning, rap, falsetto, soulful, operatic.
- Distance: close-mic, airy, distant.
Example: acoustic ballad, intimate breathy female vocal, close-mic.
Do not name artists
Asking for a specific singer's voice is not something the style should do; it can lead to a rejected song and raises rights issues. Describe the qualities you like instead.
Duets and backing vocals
- Write duet, male and female vocals in the style.
- Backing vocals: gang vocals in chorus, gospel choir backing, harmonies in the chorus.
Match the voice to the genre
A breathy voice disappears in a loud rock mix; a belting voice can overwhelm a lo-fi track. If the voice feels wrong for the song, change the vocal descriptor before changing anything else.
