An AI generator gives you one stereo file. Stems turn it back into parts you can control.
What you get
In MixingMusic, stem separation produces 6 WAV files, all the same length and aligned:
- Vocals: lead and backing vocals.
- Drums: kick, snare, hats and most percussion.
- Bass: bass guitar, synth bass, 808.
- Guitar: acoustic and electric guitars.
- Piano: piano and many keyboard parts.
- Other: everything else (strings, pads, synths, effects).
On the free plan, the stem separation of your free song is included.
How to export them
Open the song menu (right click or the ⋯ button) and choose Export stems · ZIP to download them, or Open in MixingStudio to start mixing right away. A waiting screen shows progress; separation usually takes one to three minutes.
Use stems with care
Separation is an estimate: some sound from one instrument always ends up in another stem. To avoid artifacts:
- Prefer small moves. Raising the vocal 2 dB is safe; soloing a stem and processing it hard exposes artifacts.
- Keep all stems playing. They add back up to the original; muting one creates holes.
- Check the "other" stem before you lower it; it often carries important textures.
What stems are good for
- Bringing a buried vocal forward.
- Controlling a boomy bass or a harsh hi-hat.
- Replacing the AI vocal with your own recording.
- Making an instrumental or an a cappella version.
