The style field is where most AI songs are won or lost. It is short, but every word counts.
A simple formula
Genre + 2–3 instruments + mood + voice + tempo (optional)
Example: latin pop, acoustic guitar, congas, warm synth pads, uplifting, bright female vocal, 96 BPM
Each part does a job:
- Genre sets the rhythm and the arrangement conventions.
- Instruments steer the palette. Two or three is enough; ten will blur.
- Mood shapes harmony and energy.
- Voice describes the character of the singer.
- Tempo helps when the groove matters (dance, reggaeton, ballads).
Good vs weak examples
| Weak | Better |
|---|
| a sad song | melancholic piano ballad, soft strings, intimate male vocal |
| reggaeton | romantic reggaeton, dembow rhythm, deep 808, synth plucks, smooth male vocal, 92 BPM |
| rock | 2000s alt rock, distorted guitars, driving bass, live drums, raspy female vocal |
Words to leave out
- Artist names. They do not belong in the style and can get the song rejected. Describe the sound instead: "breathy, close-mic female vocal" rather than a singer's name.
- Instructions. "Make the chorus catchy" or "follow my melody" are commands; the style field responds to descriptors.
- Contradictions. "Minimal, huge orchestra" pulls in two directions.
Use the form for what the form controls
Vocal gender, instrumental mode and length have their own controls in MixingMusic. Set them there instead of describing them in the style.
Iterate one variable at a time
If the result is close but not right, change one thing: the tempo, one instrument, or the mood word. Changing everything at once makes it hard to learn what worked.
