Tune and control the room
Use fresh strings, check tuning between takes and place absorption behind the singer or opposite amplifiers in a small room.
Record with less gain
Aim for peaks between −18 and −10 dBFS. Character should come from the amplifier and performance, not converter clipping.
Recommended microphones and placement
Models are tonal references; the room, source and position matter more than the brand.
Electric guitars
A dynamic such as a Shure SM57 or Sennheiser e906 near the cone adds attack; a ribbon farther back can add body. Check phase before blending.
Drums and vocals
Try a low-frequency dynamic such as a Beta 52A or D112 on kick, dynamics on snare and toms, small-diaphragm condensers overhead, and an SM7B or large-diaphragm condenser for vocals depending on the room.
Compressors and peak control
Use compression with an audible purpose and always compare at matched level.
Control without erasing attack
An 1176-style compressor can catch vocal or room peaks. A dbx 160-style VCA can retain punch on kick, snare or bass when attack is not too fast.
Mix bus
Try an SSL-style compressor at 2:1, 10–30 ms attack and only 1–2 dB of gain reduction. Remove it if the mix becomes smaller.

Do not simply turn up every guitar. Automate the arrangement, filter unnecessary lows and decide which guitar leads each section.
