LUFS estimates perceived loudness. Unlike a sample peak meter, it considers how human hearing responds across frequency and time.

Momentary versus integrated

Momentary LUFS changes quickly with the music. Integrated LUFS is the average across the measured program and only becomes representative after enough of the song has played. A live partial average should not be confused with the certified value for the complete file.

True peak and sample peak

Peak measurements protect against overload. True peak estimates inter-sample behavior that may appear during conversion or playback. Loudness and peak are related but not interchangeable.

Useful targets

There is no universal creative target. Around −16 LUFS can preserve more dynamics, −14 LUFS offers a balanced modern level, and more competitive profiles may be louder. Genre, arrangement and crest factor determine what remains musical.

Normalization does not repair a master

Streaming services may adjust playback gain, but they do not fix harsh EQ, clipped transients or uncontrolled low end. A good master must still sound balanced before normalization.

Compare fairly

Always compare original and master at matched perceived volume. Otherwise the louder version will often win even when it has worse tone or dynamics.
