How to Mix a Song Step by Step

1. Prepare the session

Name every stem, align the starting point and remove unwanted noise. Keep the original files untouched and create a working copy.

2. Build a static balance

Before adding plugins, use only faders and pan. Make the lead element understandable at a comfortable monitor level. If the song does not communicate with a static balance, plugins will not solve the arrangement.

3. Protect headroom

Avoid clipping the master bus. A premaster with controlled peaks gives the mastering stage room to shape dynamics and loudness.

4. Use subtractive EQ first

Remove rumble and resonances only when they cause a problem. Do not high-pass every instrument automatically. Listen in context and solve masking between elements.

5. Control dynamics

Compression should support the musical role: stabilize a vocal, add punch to drums or keep bass consistent. Match output level when comparing bypass so loudness does not bias the decision.

6. Create depth

Use short ambience for cohesion, longer reverbs for distance and delays for rhythmic space. Sends usually create a more coherent environment than separate reverbs on every track.

7. Automate the song

Professional mixes move. Automate vocal phrases, effect sends and transitions instead of forcing one static setting to work everywhere.

8. Check references and systems

Compare with a reference at matched loudness. Listen in mono, headphones, small speakers and low volume. The goal is translation, not perfection on one system.

9. Export the premaster

Export a high-resolution stereo file without clipping or lossy encoding. Then master the song as a separate stage.

AI mixing can accelerate the first balance and reveal a useful direction. MixingMusic.AI analyzes up to 12 stems, recommends a genre preset and lets the artist review the result before mastering.
