A reference is a released song that helps define direction. It is not a template to copy and it should not replace artistic judgment.
Select music with a similar density, lead element and emotional goal. A sparse acoustic ballad is a poor tonal reference for a dense electronic track even if both are popular.
The louder version usually feels clearer and more exciting. Reduce the reference until its perceived level is close to your mix. Then compare tone, punch and depth fairly.
Use a chorus against a chorus or a verse against a verse. Ask specific questions: Is the vocal more forward? Is the kick below or above the bass? How wide are the supporting instruments? How bright is the top end?
Absolute EQ curves are less useful than relationships between elements. A reference teaches proportion: voice versus accompaniment, kick versus bass, dry versus ambient and center versus sides.
One song may guide vocal presence while another demonstrates low-end control. Two or three references reduce the risk of copying the limitations of a single production.
The purpose is to make better decisions, not erase what makes the song unique. Once the mix translates and supports its emotion, the reference has done its job.
