Headroom is the distance between the highest signal peak and digital full scale. It is not a magic number, but a clipped premaster leaves no room to recover damaged transients.
Keep the master bus below 0 dBFS and check the loudest section. A peak around −6 dBFS is common advice, but any clean level with real margin can work because digital gain can be adjusted transparently.
Normalization is unnecessary before mastering. Preserve the natural level of the mix and avoid maximizing the waveform simply to make it look loud.
If a limiter is only there for loudness, export a version without it. If it is essential to the artistic sound, provide both limited and unlimited references and explain the intention.
Export WAV at the session sample rate and preferably 24-bit or 32-bit float. Do not convert to MP3 before mastering.
Leave complete reverb tails and sensible silence. Remove accidental clicks, count-ins and unwanted noises, but do not cut musical decay.
MixingMusic.AI analyzes resolution, channels, peak and integrated loudness before processing and warns when a file does not preserve enough margin.
